Will Ever Be Placed on the Legacy Wall
Once all 800 bricks are reserved, this opportunity closes forever. Your brick becomes a permanent part of Masjid Muhammad's historic legacy — a tribute that will endure for generations.
A Living Testament to Faith

Masjid Muhammad, The Nation's Mosque, stands in the heart of the Nation's Capital as a living testament to faith, resilience, and leadership. Erected in 1960, with roots reaching back to the 1930s, it is among the earliest houses of worship established by African American Muslims in America.
Its legacy was shaped by pioneers such as the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Imam W. D. Mohammed, and Muhammad Ali — leaders whose vision continues to guide generations.
Now, through the Legacy Donor Brick Campaign, you have the opportunity to etch your name, your family's name, or the name of a loved one into the very foundation of this historic institution. Each brick is a permanent tribute — a mark of faith, love, and commitment to the future.
Historical Significance
Founding and Construction
The congregation was founded around 1937 by Elijah Muhammad. The current modernist building was designed by architect David R. Byrd and completed in 1960.
Malcolm X's Involvement
Civil rights leader Malcolm X was instrumental in the building's creation; he personally raised funds and donated $1,400 of his own money toward its construction.
Transition to Mainstream Islam
In 1975, under the leadership of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed (the son of Elijah Muhammad), the community transitioned to mainstream Sunni Islam. The building was renamed "Washington Masjid" and later Masjid Muhammad.
Architectural Features
The building was originally designed with pews in the main hall, which were removed in 1975 to facilitate conventional Islamic prayer (salah) and correct the prayer direction toward the qibla.
